Newb - anybody got LTC mining working on Nvidia GPU?
« on: January 25, 2013, 03:28:33 PM »
Newb here - some understanding of Linux, but I haven't found a clear document that states what is possible and what is required to do it.

I know Nvidia sucks for mining, but I got 5 cards for almost nothing... BTC mining works on these cards with latest release of cgminer. I'm able to compile and run with scrypt support, but cgminer hangs when generating hashes.

Here are some errors I don't understand from cgminer:
Code: [Select]
cl_amd_media_ops not found, will not set BITALIGN
BFI_INT patch requiring device not found, will not BFI_INT patch

Questions:
* Is OpenCL 1.2 support required for litecoin GPU mining? (Nvidia has no committed date, last I checked)
* Is ADL required to build working scrypt cgminer binary?
* What compile flags and configure options are people using?

Thanks for any help.

Have you:

Quote
export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100
Quote
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
Quote
export DISPLAY=:0

?

I'm not aware of anything further required to mine LTC on CGminer with Nvidia cards but the only Nvidia card I've done this with is in a Windows box that I've never bothered to try with Linux or even to GPU mine LTC on it as the CPU more than doubles the GPU performance (Quadro 880 vs i7-920xm).

I was exporting GPU_* vars but not DISPLAY.  I tweak around quite a bit with command line -

now I am hashing but it's quite slow (worse than 4core CPU mining), crashes periodically, and is murdering my system. Looks like I might have "SICK" performance as described in some bitcoin forum posts. Perhaps I will wait for a newer release of cgminer of try some different versions of Nvidia drivers.

Thanks for your help.

I mined with Reaper on my GTX 260 Core 216 (found 1 block so far).

Hmm may I ask what flags you used? That's pretty similar to my cards...

I guess you mined a block solo? Or do you mean as part of a pool?
I'm not sure what the probability of finding an LTC block is solo, but I would think it's pretty high!

My Reaper litecoin.conf settings are:

worksize 256
aggression 15
threads_per_gpu 1
sharethreads 10
lookup_gap 1
gpu_thread_concurrency 6144

I used this guide to setup Reaper:

I found 1 block solo mining in about 6 hours.

I have a GTX 470 and a 5870.

Putting aside the hashing speeds, I find that the fans of the Nvidia card get so loud and the temps get to 95oC but with eh 5870, I can hardly hear the fans and the temps are around 65 - 70oC.
