Litecoin Price
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:17:32 AM »
Anyone think litecoins are underpriced? If litecoins are similar to bitcoins and there will be 4 times more of them (84 million), shouldn't the price be around 4 times less (BTC price / 4 = LTC price)?

Value is always dependent upon the economy. Currently there isn't a ton of marketplace activity for Litecoin. Once that opens up, like many of us expect it will, then you will start to see the real value come through. 1/4 the price? I don't know if it will go that high, but I'd expect to see it much higher than it currently is.

I agree, if more people will start to use it than the price may go up.

It's only a matter of time before more and more Litecoin businesses appear, especially given the rising exchange rate more and more people will be interested in using their Litecoin for buying goods and services, which will in turn increase the price :)

It seems logical that any crypto currency's value is tied to several factors. If I purchase litecoins to pay for something, this pushes the value up. But if I am holding litecoins, use them to pay for something and the merchant sells them, this pushes the value down. Since litecoin supply is limited, it's price is purely based on demand. For now, I would say litecoin's value is entirely speculation.

Anyone think litecoin's price would go up to $66.50 someday, 1/4 of BTC's high ($266)?

In my opinion the exchange rate will settle at approx. 1 LTC = 0.25 BTC at some point in future.
This ratio may turn even more favourable for LTC if the speed of transaction is recognized by users.
I also think that the price of BTC will go beyond $266 as the market expands.

But in the end, my guess is as good as yours.

I am confused by buying and selling in an exchange. on https://btc-e.com/exchange/ltc_usd there is one price ($3.6) and on https://vircurex.com/welcome/index?alt=usd&base=ltc it sells for $4.3. Why is it so different? Could I just spend all my money on LTC on btc-e then sell it all on vircurex over and over again for profit?

it's called arbitrage. It's like how people want to send US dollars to BTCE and want to flip them on MtGox. sounds good on paper right? There's the issue of middle men that want to snag your hard earned money. Bank wires don't come cheap. Then OkayPay takes their cut... which is at their discretion. so by the time you funded your BTCE account you've already lost some of your capital.

1/4th would it be if it gets used as much as Bitcoin, if it would be used 4 times as much for buying things it would be actually 1:1 if it gets only 1/2th of bitcoins economy it will be at 1/8th.

The amount of coins doesn't really say that much, more important are the merchants that accept them as a currency.

Fast transaction time can give LTC advantage over BTC. If LTC cannot be mined by dedicated ASIC easily and is mainly mined by general public to make it more decentralized, it will be accepted more and the value could even be higher than BTC.

You completely ignored the factor of time (84 millions coins wasn't available at the moment) and change of demand over time because of any unforeseen reasons.

I think Bitcoin stands a higher liability to political suicide within.
