Solo mining problem - litecoin-qt and cgminer
« on: March 09, 2013, 12:04:13 PM »
Litecoin-qt and cgminer runs fine with a pool. After getting lucky mining a block solo in litecoin-qt I thought I'd try again using cgminer also.

I setup litecoin-qt as a server. I also start mining manually so the CPU hashes as well, but this should be optional. I'm unsure if it's correct to choose Solo or Pool though. They both hash, but no other information appears in the mining window.

litecoin.conf:
Code: [Select]
server=1
rpcuser=user
rpcpassword=pass
rpcallow=127.0.0.1
rpcport=9332

cgminer connects to the server at 127.0.0.1:9332 and starts hashing. The message "New block detected on network" appears quite often, but it gets absolutely no accepted or rejected.

Litecoin-qt gets absolutely no messages at all....not even "New block detected on network". I assumed it would get the same messages since they are working together.

My question is, should I being seeing more output from litecoin-qt and cgminer? Or is this working as it should?

The results after running cgminer all night:

I get similar results on my rig that only hashes at 100kh/s.  It will only show rejects every few hours so for example in the time frame that you showed here, 7 hrs, I would maybe get 3 - 5 rejected shares.  I don't know exactly what you should expect since you're hashing at 71kh/s.  Once about every 3-5 days my machine at 100kh/s will actually solve a block.  In between that time it pretty much looks like the results you show except as I mentioned I'll get some rejected blocks every couple of hours.  Now I will get a message in cgminer saying a new block has been detected.  If you don't even get that something may be up but if you do, your results may be normal.

Thanks for the reply. The only difference is that I'm not getting any rejected blocks either.

A block every 3 to 5 days isn't too bad. If that's your average, then it's apparently better for you to solo than to work in a pool.

If you are above a certain hash rate, yes.  What I didn't mention is that those stats I just rattled off came before the latest jump in difficulty.  I don't know what it is going to be like going forward.

At the current difficulty CPU mining is a complete waste of energy and money. At 100kh/s you should expect to find a block about every half a year! Litecoinpool has a good calculator https://www.litecoinpool.org/calc and even gives you an estimate of the next difficulty https://www.litecoinpool.org/stats.

Even GPU mining is just about profitable if you consider investment cost - you would need at least 6 months to pay off your equipment and that assumes 100% uptime, no repairs, no exchange fees and stable prices and difficulty.
