Litecoin Calcs say kH/s and Bit Coin Calcs say MHash/s
« on: April 16, 2013, 02:29:47 PM »
Hi guys

Im new to ltc and look forward to sharing information here seems like a great community to be part of!

I have a spare HD 7970 in a computer that I would like to use for mining.

Im trying to figure out if I should go with Lite coins or bit coins. However the calculators both say diferente things when it comes to khash / mhash.

For example:

LTC Calc: http://give-me-ltc.com/calc
Says: kH/s

BTC Calc: http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/
Says: Mhash

So i went to the HW review sites for both LTC and BTC and the hash rate of my HD 7970 is approximately the same on both 685 Mhash or Khash. The reason I say both Mhash and Khash is because the github LTC HW comparison says Khash and the bitcoin HW comparison says Mhash.

LTC HW Comparison: https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison#wiki-AMD_CPUs
BTC HW Comparison: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

So what is it Khash or Mhash? Does it matter?

I suppose it has something to do with the coin type. But im not sure.

It does not matter...Litecoin mining just runs slower...but over all results are the same.

So what is it Khash or Mhash? Does it matter?

First of all, it does not matter.

Why?
Because every miner is affected the same way.

So, if Bitcoin is MHash and Litecoin is KHash, does that mean my GPU mines Litecoin slower?
Yes. About a thousand times slower. Remember, everyone else is a thousand times slower too.

Why is mining Litecoin a thousand times slower than Bitcoin?
Because Bitcoin is mined using SHA256. Litecoin is mined using scrypt. The scrypt algorithm is much more difficult to hash than SHA256.
This also means that ASIC devices made for SHA256 Bitcoin mining can not be used for scrypt Litecoin mining.

thank you guys both i have been watching the btc-e.com graphs and although the bitcoins are worth more they are harder to earn and less stable than lite coin.

Im no market expert nor IT guru but I like the fact that I could generate some sort of income in an easy way.

What are you guys mining? LTC or BRT?

All I can think of now is where can I get a cheap graphics card and where can I plug it in lol!

Cheers.
