R9 290 scrypt mining performance
« on: November 08, 2013, 03:22:51 AM »
Hi everyone-

Got my new MSI R290 (non-x) card from Newegg today.  Ran a few benchmarks in Windows.  It's very fast and fans aren't loud unless you overclock/powertune it.

Of course, the big question I had was: How well does it mine?

So here's my setup:
  • Intel 3570k CPU on a Z77 mobo
  • 16GB of 2133 RAM
  • Windows 8.1 x64
  • AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta9.2 driver (came out today)
  • cgminer 3.7.2

cgminer settings:
engine/mem 965/1250
thread concurrency 32765
intensity 20
g 1
w 512
lookup-gap 2
powertune 20

The card is in a well ventilated case and fan speed was set at 65%

The hashrate stabilized around 843 kh/s.  I suspect there is room for optimization (e.g. shouldn't the 512-bit bus be good for scrypt?).  I was hoping for a bit more performance/$, but maybe that will come with time.

I won't have time to try other settings or measure power use until the weekend.  If anyone else has a card, post your results here.  :)

Pretty good alternative to 7970 more hashrare with equal on paper tdp.
Did you measure with kill-a-watt ?
Thanks for posting this.

Can you provide the newegg link to the card you purchased? I don't see an MSI R290 (non-x) on their site. Thanks!

Mate, try two threads and up the thread concurrency a lot...also, that core speed is wicked low for a 290. They clock to 1150 much easier than previous gen, it's not a 7970/7950. Don't be afraid ;)

I'll be playing with it more this weekend including checking power.  I'll update the thread with my findings

Strangely, it shows discontinued.  Not even a week old and discontinued?  ::)

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll be trying a few things this weekend.  It'd love to get >900 out of this card  ;D

what is the wattage on that card (or your system?) can you check?

Thanks for the info!  Been waiting to see how this card preformed.  I just got a 280x yesterday pulling 730kH on it now, which is respectable for $100 cheaper :D  However I do feel that you may find more optimized settings soon!  Good luck :)

What is the power draw at the wall? Also what are your system specs?

This, definitely need to try two threads.

How did you come up with a TC of 32765 ?
I got my R9 290 just a few hours ago and that TC does seem to hit the sweet spot from my testing so far but I'm trying to understand how you came to it.
I will be trying more settings this evening and let you know if I find anything that outperforms your settings.

When you find working settings, please also report hasrate@wattAtWall and if you overclocked/undervolted, etc.

I'm watching this thread with interest, as I'm contemplating adding this card as an option in my build guides here: http://www.coinminingrigs.com

weareken, if you can run clinfo and post the output here, let's see what can be the optimal numbers :)
