Litecoin 0.8.6.x - READY FOR POWER USERS
« on: December 03, 2013, 12:16:46 PM »

https://litecoin.info/Upgrading_Litecoin#Upgrading_to_0.8.6.1
For users capable of editing litecoin.conf, it is now the time to upgrade to 0.8.6.1 where you can enjoy 20x lower fees.  Follow the special addnode= notes to make it safe.  Public release will happen soon after many have upgraded to newfee capable relay nodes.

Why is this not on Litecoin.org yet?
Ordinary users who connect to 8 random peers have a high probability of connecting to only old peers.  Since 0.8.6.1 sends transactions with lower fees, the old peers may not relay it and transactions can become delayed.  By editing litecoin.conf, power users can guarantee that they connect to one of the many high capacity supernodes operated by Litecoin volunteers.  These nodes are interconnected with each other and the pools to allow the new lower fee transactions to be mined.  After enough of the network has upgraded to 0.8.6.1 we will release it on litecoin.org.

Have a server with excess bandwidth?  Help strengthen the global Litecoin network by operating a Supernode!

Major Benefits of Litecoin 0.8.6.x
  • Coin Control, Disable Wallet and many additional features.
  • 20x reduction in fees!
  • Major speed boost in block sync and reindexing.
  • Reduced network propagation latency, fewer orphans.
  • Prevention of the previously common block database corruption on MacOS X.

Mandatory upgrade to p2pool-13.4 needed for Litecoin 0.8.6.1/b]
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.0

0.8.6.1 has been released.  Below is MacOS X testing notes for the pre-release.  There have been zero reports of new corruption so far.

Status Report
This code has been under vigorous testing and code review for many months, with a great deal of user testing on Linux and Windows.  A few mining pools are already using the v0.8.5.3 pre-releases because of its higher performance and potential for reduced orphans.  Many users have been using Coin Control in previous test builds since ~August 2013.  The network is also ready for a major 20x reduction in transaction fees.  All of this code seemed stable and ready on Linux and Windows, but we have been cautious about releasing due to issues with MacOS X.

How to test MacOS X
All platforms need testing, but MacOS X in particular needs special attention.

Most of the work in the past few weeks has been in trying to stabilize the intermittent database corruption issues that have been annoying for both Bitcoin and Litecoin MacOS X users.  Due to the seriousness of the Mac issues Litecoin Dev joined Bitcoin in offering a joint bounty to attract more engineers to look at the issue.  After several previous attempts, we believe Litecoin v0.8.5.3-rc8 may have stabilized the client on MacOS X.  In particular the following must be vigorously tested to better ensure the bugs really are fixed.
  • Clicking "Send" in GUI has on rare occasions caused the client to crash on MacOS X after Coin Control was added.  Testing of previous builds indicated it was some kind of race condition that never happened on Linux or Windows but would happen intermittently on MacOS X.  Please help us to verify that this issue really is fixed by sending many transactions with the MacOS X v0.8.5.3-rc8 client to help us determine if the issue really is fixed now.  Since sending coins can cost you real money, you may want to test this with Litecoin Testnet.  Use the Testnet Faucet to get free test coins.
  • All versions of Bitcoin and Litecoin 0.8.x experienced intermittent leveldb (chainstate) corruption for some users with MacOS 10.8.x.  This issue was quite annoying because these users sometimes need to wait hours to recover a usable wallet from a reindex.  We need vigorous testing of this new build to better ensure that it is fixed.  Open and close the wallet many times.  Suspend/wake, hibernate/wake and send transactions to test other fix, close the wallet and reopen many times.
This code is nearly identical to Bitcoin 0.8.5-OMG10 so these MacOS tests may be conducted there too.

I have all my coins in cold storage, is there a way for me to help test this new client without touching my coins?

Affirmative, as stated in the original post:

Do we need to start the wallet with any special switches or command lines to enable it on the testnet?

Edit: figured it out, you have to start it with the -testnet parameter

I'm on a hackintosh. It crashes reproducibly when clicking send after about the 5th time, whether coin control is enabled or not.

ok on mac OSX 10.8.2 and testing so far so good

using coin control when I select inputs fee = 0.00, priority - high

is this a recommendation I don't need to pay fee what fees should I be paying?

Also you may want to have "enter LTC address not BTC address"

This code we consider to be more stable than 0.8.5.1. Release has been stalled for a while mainly because of the Mac issues.  In my opinion everyone should upgrade to 0.8.5.3-rc8 now, and 0.8.6.1 when it comes real soon.
