Fix For Slow XFX Double D 7970 (Non-ghz)
« on: December 05, 2013, 12:35:22 AM »
Hey guys,

I bought some 7970s on Black Friday and didn't pay attention to the brand. XFX baby! I received two slightly different cards. v1.0 and v2.0 on the serial. v2.0 can pull ~740kh/s very easily. v1.0 on the other hand experiences the issues that so many people here have. It has trouble breaking 450kh/s.

So after about 8 hours of looking around having no success, I finally managed to get a working BIOS flash for this card.
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/133826/gigabyte-hd7970-3072-121106.html

Flashed that puppy with AtiFlash (used Rufus to setup FreeDOS) and had success. Other BIOS's didn't work and bricked me.

Settings that I've used for this: ./cgminer --scrypt -I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8128 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-engine 1040 --gpu-memclock 1825

Now I've got to go through and tune them by hand. But that's a huge improvement!

Also, the BIOS between v2.0 and v1.0 is the same.

Note: Apparently HDMI output doesn't work with this BIOS.

I had hope you'd be my savior, but this bios gets me only black screen like the previous PC bios I tried :/
Same as you, xfx 7970 non-GHZ edition, V1.

Mine is V1.0 on serial, model FX-797A-TDJV.

Is this the same as the one you flashed? (question for OP)

Lemme go tear down my rig and shine a flashlight in there.

FX-797A-TD FX-797A-TDJ

That's what I found.

@breel: Make sure you do -f -newbios as that's what I did.

Got it flashed, got black screen on boot.  Fiddled around and found out that the HDMI out does not work when you flash this BIOS, and my monitor only has HDMI.  Thankfully my Oculus Rift came today and it came with a DVI -> HDMI adapter.  So I'm back online :)

The khash/s though... WOW.  SOOOOO MUCH BETTER

Seriously dude, you freaking rock.

Sweet dude! Glad you got your machine working. What speeds are you getting? Good to note on the HDMI. I'll add that to the OP.

670-680khash/s at about 85-86c stock clocks of this gigabyte bios (full 100% fan speed, this double d cooler really sucks the double d)

I'd tip ya but I just got into the LTC mining scene and have yet to earn a full LTC :(

Well you guys are indeed my saviors!
700kh/s without even o/c the card!

The bios worked but hdmi didn't... I feel bad, I used to work in IT and didn't check that :)
Since it's not my main machine it's not a huge deal, yet it does not "feel" good... like is it the bios not frying something?

More than likely the card this came off of just didn't have HDMI. Not a big deal if you're mining, I imagine. Better than 500kh/s ;)

My temps are pretty low on the v1.0, for whatever reason. The V2.0 is in the mid 80's.

I'd try other GB bioses, but I've spent already so much time...
Just got to remember flashing it back when I sell it.

I got up to 780kh/s, which based on the wiki is pretty darn good, and more than 200kh/s better than this morning...
Before flashing, -g 2 was bad, like really bad, now here is my config:
-w 256 -I 13 --gpu-powertune 20 --thread-concurrency 8192 --lookup-gap 2 -g 2
I o/c with different tools, and at 1110/1750 it seems best.
Past 1750 for the memory cgminer died.. maybe I'll try again later.
It's so strange, I have to increase one side at a time (memory or gpu) a little bit, till it gets slower, then go back one notch, increase the other side for a bit till it gets slower and so forth till it crashes and then I maxed it out.

I'll mine some and send you guys something for the help!
I'm happy :)

I'm rockin' the 785kh/s now too. Thanks for the config B)

The v2.0 now seems to be the lagger. Only getting *gasp* ~750kh/s on it. Tried flashing the BIOS to the 2.0 without success. Man, I live a hard life...

I'm at 87c on the v1.0 and 83c on the v2.0. What temps are you feelin'? I just threw in a pretty beefy fan keep things below 90c. Seems to be working.

Well it didn't last that long, same config but little less o/c now and cruising 740.
If this lasts the night, I'll play again tomorrow.
Somehow I guess you helping me allowed me to help you too hahaa :)(

Think this will work on the XFX Double D 7970 GHz edition? I just bought 2 of them and received them earlier this week. Even with messing around all day, I was only able to get the first on to go at 560Kh/s. The 2nd one ran at 550Kh/s out of the box so I haven't bothered messing around with it yet.

Added after edit:
Doing some research and I just saw that some cards have 2 bios version and you can switch back and forth. Never knew that. However, my GHz edition seems to have a 1 and 2 in the same spot as the regular edition, but no switch. I won't want to flash my card if I could brick it and never fix it!

Been stable a 740 all night, so not too shaby of an improvement!
I will try later again to work it to 780 or so, but maybe that's just too much...
